be likely to ~ <-> be unlikely to ~ 

 

 

We use them to say that something will probably happen or not happen in the future.

 

~할 것 같다 / ~할 것 같지 않다 (미래에 어떠한 일이 일어나거나 일어날 것 같지 않을 때 사용한다.)

 

 

Example)

 

You're more likely to fail.

 

실패할 가능성이 더 크다.

 

Cf. more likely (~할 가능성이 더 큰) <-> less likely (~할 가능성이 낮은/적은)

 

 

The economy is likely to recover slowly after the long recession.

 

경제가 긴 침체기 후에 천천히 회복될 것 같다.

 

 

Unlikely 대신 “not likely” 사용 가능

 

Zoe’s not likely to arrive before eight o’clock. She doesn’t finish work till seven.

 

조는 8시 전까지 올 것 같지 않아. 7시까지 일을 못 마치거든.
